You may be thinking, (ok, you're most definitely thinking) "Footballs and sapphires?? What in the world do they have to do with each other?" The answer is, well, pretty much nothing. But, you may be surprised to know that they do have quite a bit in common. What could that possibly be you ask?
Think of crisp, cool breezes. Think of the alluring scent of smore filled evenings by the fire pit. Think of children laughing in a pile of raked leaves. Think sweatshirts and jeans. Think football & sapphires. Think...September.
Most often celebrated for their deep blue color, the sapphire can also be found in shades of pink, orange, green, yellow, purple and even black. It was officially named the September birthstone by the American National Association of Jewelers in 1912. They're also considered the go-to gift for the 45th wedding anniversary. But, this beautiful gem was on the record books well before then.
Blue sapphires date back to 800 B.C. and were believed to ward off evil and reflect heaven. They were revered among emperors, kings and clergy and some considered the sapphire to be a talisman. Even today, some believe that sapphires can bring inner peace, trigger telepathy and cure mental illness.
The first synthetic blue sapphire was created in 1902. Today, laboratories do such a good job of growing them that only gemologists can distinguish a synthetic sapphire from a real one. Synthetic or real, sapphires continue to be one of the most popular gemstones. In fact, when Prince Charles gave Diana, Princess of Wales, an 18k sapphire engagement ring in 1981, diamonds took a step back as the be all and end all of precious jewels.
I suppose I could now go into the history of football. But, I'll leave that to the NFL bloggers and stick to jewelry FAQs for the time being. However, that's not to say that we here at Brightlings Beads don't appreciate the significance of this ever popular sport in the American culture. Which is why we have not only a plethora of sapphire products, from crystals to stringing materials, we also have some lovely football beads to use in your football themed designs.
