Well, for those of you born in the month of April, I’m sure you already know that your birthstone is the best friend of femmes worldwide, and if you weren’t born in April and didn’t know that…well, now you do. So let’s ponder for a moment that wondrous rock, that BFF that you never get mad at, that thing of beauty that seems to exist merely to enhance your own!
First off, we already know that an engagement ring had better be a diamond or it’s not really an engagement ring. Well why is that? Have you ever stopped to think about it? Probably not…I mean, who cares why, just put that rock on my finger, right? Well, it was around 1870 that the De Beers company’s marketing department put out the famous ‘Diamonds are Forever’ campaign – that still exists today – and not only convinced the world that before lovelorn men say ‘I do,’ they’d better be saying how much their three-months salary comes to the local jeweler! (FYI, it was also the De Beers company that decided three month’s salary is the appropriate amount for a groom-to-be to spend on a ring…so there’s one marketing department that deserves a thank you note from all of you married, or soon-to-be married ladies out there!)
And it’s also a darn good thing that the diamond is the traditional symbol of undying love to be given before the marriage, because if you go by traditional anniversary gift lists, you’d have to wait until your 60th anniversary to get one of those carbon-based cuties!
But why is April, of all months, the month that has such a gorgeous rock as its birthstone? I mean, the writer of this particular blog was born in August, so, well, mine is peridot…yippee. Well, when we think of April, we think of tax month, and when we think of tax month, we think of money, and when we think of diamonds the concept of money also arises, so maybe that’s it? Then again, April is the official start of baseball season, and what is the game of baseball played on? Yep, you got it: a diamond. (For all of you ladies having a birthday in April, that last little tidbit of information might be a good segue into starting a conversation about your gift this year. You know, as he’s sitting there, watching the Cleveland Indians beat the New York Yankees, when he sips on his favorite lager you can bring up De Beers, and then the whole ‘baseball diamond’ thing, and then remind him that the celebration of your birth is nigh. Just a suggestion.)
And in closing, just a reminder to jewelry designers who desire to create pieces of jewelry without having to purchase actual diamonds, Brightlings Beads has a wide array of Majestic and Swarovski Crystal beads and pendants that could easily be considered a girl’s best friend forever, so get that creative spark going, and see just what beautiful pieces you can create in with the sparkle of a diamond found in crystals.
