And So Begin the Many Moods of Fall

September is among us and with it comes shorter days, brisk evenings and the ever changing colors of fall.  For those of us in the jewelry design business, keeping up with the latest color trends is an essential component to remaining competitive and relevant.  What else besides color can instantly change a mood just by putting it on?  Color is one of our most powerful forms of expression and can instill immediate confidence if we know how to use it to our advantage.  So, with that in mind, I did a little research on color trends for the Fall 2013 season and found that one color appears to be at the top of everyone's list...Emerald.

Emerald Swarovski Flatbacks Crystal
Pantone, widely known as the global authority on color, is not only predicting that Emerald will be widely embraced by designers this Fall, but had also previously named it the 2013 Color of the Year.  However, this shouldn't imply that we are limited in our ability to experiment and be versatile.  Just as the leaves change their colors to reflect the many moods of fall, the 2013 color palette allows designers to explore those moods as well.  While Emerald leads the palette this seasoon, other shades of green are quickly catching up.  Moss green, a mix between olive and light grey, is popping up everywhere, as are more yellow-toned greens, such as lime.

Here's where it gets really fun though.  The next color climbing the ranks and sure to be huge in jewelry designs this season, is Samba Red.  This is a rich, vibrant red that some designers refer to as "Racy Red."  And here at Brightlings Beads, we know it as "Siam."  Regardless of the name you choose to call it, when paired with Emerald, or any shade of green for that matter, it creates a bold, dramatic look.

Now, you may be thinking that pairing Emerald and Siam sounds an awful lot like a Christmas design.  And you would be right if the moods of this year's Fall season ended there.  However, much to our delight, the old staples are still very much a part of the color palette, with one notable exception.  Blacks have taken a backseat to rich Browns and deep Greys.  Blend one of these staple colors with your Emeralds and Siams, and you'll have a stunning, fall inspired creation.

If these beautiful combinations don't fully inspire you, there's no need to worry.  You still have several moods to explore.  In addition to vibrant purples and oranges, bold, deep blues are also making a statement this season.  Pantone has named it Mykonos Blue, named for the rich blue colors of the Aegean Sea.  But at Brightlings Beads, we offer products in so many shades of blue that I'd need to write an essay to name them all.  So instead, I invite you to browse our website and do a simple search using the word "blue."  You'll be amazed with our endless options of blue colored components for your designs.

As if all of this weren't exciting enough, you might be surprised to know that Pantone is reporting that the men's color palette for this season mimics many of the same tones as the women's.  This may completely change your way of thinking when designing pieces for men.  To keep them masculine enough, simply blend the vibrant colors of the women's palette with the more subdued, neutral hues of standard men's jewelry.  You can expect to create some jaw-dropping designs.

Fall 2013 is not going to be a season of bland, dull blacks and creams.  Instead, it promises to be filled with an array of brilliantly full colors, to which you'll delight in your design possibilities.  Be creative, be daring, have fun...and most importantly, embrace the many moods of Fall.
